We often hear from some customers who have tried to perform a DIY hitch installation on their own. While some people may be experienced enough to perform a hitch installation on their own, we feel that most people would be better off paying an expert to do the job right the first time. At Triangle Mobile Hitch, we’re highly experienced and would love to help you install a hitch on your vehicle.
Why DIY Hitch Installation May be a Bad Idea
Below are just a few reasons why it may make more sense to hire someone else to handle your hitch installation:
- Do you have the right tools? – Properly installing a trailer hitch requires quite a number of tools. You may have some of these tools lying around your garage, but you likely don’t have them all. Unfortunately if you don’t have the proper tools you could end up turning a 2 hour job into one that takes you all day.
- Some installs require drilling and modifying underbody panels – Unfortunately, every hitch installation is different. Some vehicles may require drilling into the frame of the vehicle while others may require somewhat complex underbody trimming. If you’re not prepared for these types of complex installations you could quickly find yourself in over your head.
- Wiring installation can be difficult – Installing a hitch is one thing, but if you’re interested in pulling a trailer you’ll also have to install wiring as well. Trailer wiring is required by law if you’re planning to pull any type of trailer. Depending on your vehicle, trailer wiring installation can be quite complex. In some instances you may have to run a power wire under your vehicle from your hitch all the way to the battery under your hood. Running this wire is something that should be done very carefully to avoid the wire coming into contact with any moving parts.
