The Subaru Ascent is Subaru’s largest SUV and was introduced back in 2017. The Subaru Ascent is a great option for growing families as it’s the only Subaru with a third row.
One way to make your Ascent even more versatile is by adding a trailer hitch. The team at Triangle Mobile Hitch has installed hundreds of Subaru trailer hitches, including many for the popular Subaru Ascent. Before you choose the right company for your Subaru Ascent trailer hitch installation, we thought it would be beneficial to put together an in-depth guide outlining your options.

Concealed Vs. Non-Concealed – Which to Choose for My Subaru Ascent Trailer Hitch Installation?
The Subaru Ascent offers two different hitch options. Below we’ll explain the differences between the two options.
Concealed Trailer Hitch for Subaru Ascent
The concealed trailer hitch option for your Subaru Ascent is more expensive because the rear bumper has to be removed which is obviously more labor intensive.
The benefits of a concealed trailer hitch for your Subaru Ascent are as follows:
- Cleaner Look – Because the hitch is more concealed you only will see the hitch opening and none of the hitch bar.
- Better Ground Clearance – Because the rear bumper has to be removed for the Subaru Ascent hitch to be installed you will not lose as much ground clearance when compared to a non-concealed trailer hitch.
- Install Cover to Fully Hide Trailer Hitch – Another huge benefit of the concealed hitch for the Subaru Ascent is that you can reinstall the center hitch cover and make the hitch entirely invisible when not in use.

Non-Concealed Trailer Hitch for Subaru Ascent
At Triangle Mobile Hitch we typically give our customers a choice when it comes to different hitch models for certain vehicles. With the Subaru Ascent we strongly advise that our customers opt for the concealed hitch instead of the non-concealed option for a number of reasons:
- Much Cleaner Look – As you can see above, the concealed Subaru Ascent trailer hitch installation looks much better than the non-concealed version.
- Hitch Cover is Unusable – When using the non-concealed hitch you won’t have the ability to hide the hitch behind the hitch cover. This means that your hitch will always stick out underneath the bumper causing a bit of an eye sore compared to the concealed version.
- Have to Remove Spare Tire Housing – Because of how the non-concealed hitch mounts to the underside of the Ascent you have to drop the spare tire and permanently remove the spare tire housing. While this isn’t a massive problem, it’s never great when you have to remove any factory components from a vehicle.
